Dumbarton Oaks provides resources for study and publication of scholarly works in Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, and Garden and Landscape Studies. Begun as a private collection by Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss in 1920, and given to Harvard University in 1940, the library and collections include art objects, artifacts, manuscripts, and rare books. Its considered one of the richest collections and research libraries of Byzantine art in the world.

New Archive release: St Nicholas church in Patriarchate of Pec

WASHINGTON, D.C. - BELGRADE - January 8, 2008 - The BLAGO Fund increased the accessibility of Serbian historical and artistic treasures today with the release of a new collection of photographs and media. As the first release from the BLAGO field expedition of July 2007 to the Patriarchate of Pec monastery complex, the full media from the church of St. Nicholas is available today on the BLAGO Fund web site. The collection consists of 253 detailed fresco photographs, as well as two virtual reality movies.

The small Church of St Nicholas was founded by Archbishop Danilo II around year 1320. The original frescoes have not survived. The second painting of the church, commissioned by patriarch Makarije in 1673, is represented in the BLAGO archive. The frescoes were created by Radul, the most famous Serbian painter of the late 17th century. The founders' composition on the south wall showing St Nicholas taking Patriarch Makarije to Jesus Christ. Notable portraits of the Serbian saints Simon Nemanja and Sava, as well as archbishops Arsenije I and Danilo I are present on the north wall. These frescoes, as well as others, can be accessed for study in great detail through the BLAGO Fund web site.

The archive can be found at http://www.srpskoblago.org/Archives/Pec/ .

Christ is born! Happy New 2008!

Deisis from Church of St. Nicholas, Patriarchate of PecDear patrons and friends,

On behalf of the BLAGO Fund I would like to wish all of you and your families happy holidays - a healthy and prosperous New Year, and a Merry Christmas with the traditional salute:Christ is Born!

Most of you already know that during the past year, the BLAGO Fund has continued actively pursuing the directions set out at its inception almost ten years ago. As we quietly complete this decade-long milestone, I would like to have a forward-looking focus and share with you the four major goals that BLAGO Fund plans to undertake in 2008. You may notice that they are tailored to further promote and preserve the Serbian rich cultural heritage - not only through the archiving, but also through direct assistance in ensuring the survival of places and people that take care of them. To achieve any or all of them we need your help. As the end of the year nears, you may pause to review, reflect, and plan for the future, and we sincerely hope that you'll find these goals worthwhile.

Thank you,

Nenad Vukicevic
